PROJECT WIN IN A TIME OF COVID

YEAR END SUMMARY: 2021

Page back through these blogsite posts to pre-Covid times. You'll find everything from flood relief to building cafeterias and school libraries to big months-long installations of Project Protein involving entire villages.

Those Project Protein days brought dozens of student volunteers from Maejo Agricultural University in Chiang Mai.

Under the leadership of Ajarn Thongin, they'd team with hill tribe villagers to build and establish fish ponds, mushroom hotels, organic vegetable gardens, and poultry operations. They'd involve kids of all ages and their parents, and the local school with these objectives: Permanent improvement in diet, pride in new cross-generational skills, and increased profits from sales of farm products: self-sufficiency and a better life for their kids.

As a small grassroots charity, they depended on contributions from a network of friends.

The Project also planned a two-day village celebration for Thai Children's Day, including little learning stations for farming know-how, prizes, games, and music provided by the university students.

WHAT'S BEING GOING ON THIS YEAR

Before the Delta Variant in March, Thailand had amazingly low number of infections, especially in remote areas.  We got permission to put on a limited Children's Day (page back a little for the photos).

After that, things changed and so did we.  We focus on smaller projects we could do without the university students.  The main one was adopting a hill tribe village, but changing tactics for teaching agricultural techniques.  With the help of local volunteers, Aj. Thongin, supported by the village chief and council, took over some land and started a demonstration farm, using best practices  -- ponds for food fish like tilapia, catfish and tiger barbs to grow, and big roofed and screened vegetable houses where yield and quality could be dramatically improved, without the use of chemicals, only with only natural fertilizers.

Along the way they took on two more house projects, similar to the "House for Withun" (page back to last year). House Two, "A House for the Twins," in underway and materials are being sourced.  House Three is also ready for total restoration, "A Home for Mr. Sai."

This boy is our future. He's taking a break from
digging one of the new fish ponds.

One of our hardest workers is starting
water plants for the catfish to eat.

Here he's planting the first
100% organic avocado bush.

This is the family who will get
a new home early next year.

This is where Mr. Sai lives now.
His new home is already in the works.

Three huge bundles of clean, folded, used clothing arrived from a friend in Bangkok.  It was enough so everybody could get a nice stack of clothes in the right size, courtesy of Project WIN

Mr. Sai and two of the volunteers

Here's a three-minute video of one of Ajarn Thongin's many stops at the village last week
